Unacceptable levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) have been detected along the Sunshine Coast, from the southern tip of Texada Island, past Powell River and beyond Cortes Island.

Effective immediately, Sub Areas 15-1, 15-2, 15-3, 15-4, 15-5 and 15-6 are closed to the harvest of bivalve mollusks, including clams, oysters mussels, geoducks, scallops and cockles.

Part of Sub Area 15-5, is still open for the harvesting of manila clams, littleneck clams, oysters and mussels. That area is north of a line from an unnamed point on the mainland (50 degrees 7.77 minutes N 124 degrees 43.15 minutes W) to an unnamed point on the south east coast of West Redonda Island at 50 degrees 7.85 minutes N 124 degrees 48.07 minutes W, following the coastline north to an unnamed point on the north west coast of West Redonda Island at 50 degrees 18.12 minutes N 124 degrees 55.47 minutes W, and to an unnamed point on the east coast of Raza Island (50 degrees 18.25 minutes N 128 degrees 58.17 minutes W), which is closed to all bivalve shellfish except manila clams, littleneck clams, oysters and mussels

PSP, also known as Red Tide, can harmfully affect anyone consuming shellfish. Cooking does not destroy the PSP toxin.
