Local environment stakeholders are concerned with possible changes the Federal Government is making to the Fisheries Act.

Peter Woods, Director for Greenways Land Trust, says he’s worried about the removal of the habitat protection clause.

“If you remove that definition, that terminology from the act, you are essentially opening up the gates for industry to move into the commons,” explained Woods. “This is a concern for not only people in Campbell River, but for everyone in Canada.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has only announced a "review" of the Fisheries Act at this point. Speculations started when information was leaked last week that Ottawa wants to bow out of regulating fisheries habitats.

North Island M.P. John Duncan was unavailable for comment, only saying the Federal budget is too far off.
